August 1, 2023

Antionette Oyedupe Payne, affectionately known as Toni Payne, is an American-born Nigerian professional footballer making waves as a forward for Spanish Liga F club, Sevilla FC, and the Nigeria women’s national team, the Super Falcons.

Her journey to success has been nothing short of impressive at the club and the national level, showcasing her prowess both on and off the pitch.

Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Toni Payne was born to Nigerian parents, which makes her eligible to represent either the United States or Nigeria in international football.

Her passion for the beautiful game became evident from a young age, and she was nurtured in a family where football runs in the blood.

Her younger siblings, Stephen Oyebolaji Payne and Nicole Payne, also found their calling in football, with Stephen becoming an American soccer player, while Nicole shines as a defender for Paris Saint Germain.

In 2016, Payne embarked on her European football journey, joining AFC Ajax, where she honed her skills and gained valuable experience.

Her talent and dedication caught the attention of Sevilla FC, leading to her signing with the Spanish club in June 2018. Initially joining on a one-year contract, her exceptional performances earned her contract extensions for two additional years in 2019.

Payne’s international career began with the United States under-17 team, and she was a crucial part of the squad that triumphed in the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship.

However, her love for her Nigerian roots and a desire to represent her homeland led her to switch her allegiance in 2019.

On 18 February 2021, Payne made her senior debut for the Nigerian national team at the Turkish Women’s Cup, where she showcased her immense talent and skill.

Her seamless integration into the Super Falcons has been commendable, and she has become a vital component of Randy Waldrum’s squad.

Wearing the number 7 shirt, Payne’s impact on the pitch is evident as she effortlessly glides past defenders, creates scoring opportunities, and contributes to the team’s attacking prowess.

Her outstanding abilities were on full display during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, where she assisted Asisat Oshoala with her first goal, further cementing her importance to the team’s success.

Payne’s services will surely be essential to the Super Falcons’ success as they strive for gold at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
