Xavi provides updates on Gavi & Sergi Roberto injuries after Athletic victory
Barcelona manager Xavi has admitted he is confident the injury suffered by Gavi in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Athletic Club is ‘nothing’, but is significantly more concerned by that of right-back Sergi Roberto.
Gavi limped off just after half an hour after attempting to play on following a knock to the thigh, having initially been treated on the pitch before going down again a few minutes later and eventually leaving the game.
Barcelona were 3-0 up at the time and would add a fourth after the break through Ferran Torres, but the game ended on a sour note as Roberto was stretchered off with around ten minutes to go with a shoulder problem that left the utility man screaming in pain.
Reports after the game have confirmed that Roberto dislocated his shoulder following an awkward landing.
Quizzed for updates on the fitness of both players, Xavi told reporters: “Gavi’s seems to be nothing, a blow to the adductor, but it seems like Sergi is more important.
“We’ll see on Monday, but he could be out for a few days.”
Roberto’s is the latest in a long line of defensive injuries for Barcelona, who are already without Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen and have only just welcomed Hector Bellerin back from a spell on the sidelines.
Bellerin is now expected to start on Wednesday when Bayern Munich visit Camp Nou, with Barcelona knowing that even a victory may not be enough to save them from elimination from the Champions League. Should Inter beat bottom side Victoria Plzen earlier in the evening, the Blaugrana would be eliminated before even stepping on to the field.
