Why Bayern Munich Moved Fast To Sign $8 Million Rated Jonas Urbig

January 16, 2025

I write about the German football with a focus on the Bundesliga.

Jonas Urbig is set to leave 1. FC Köln and join Bayern Munich in what will be a record transfer for a 2. Bundesliga goalkeeper. According to multiple reports in Germany, Bayern Munich is expected to pay in the region of €8 million ($8.23 million) for the 21-year-old. Once completed, that deal will shatter the $4 million fee Hertha received when they sold Oliver Christensen to Fiorentina in the summer of 2023.

Bayern has been interested in Urbig for some time and wanted to sign the goalkeeper for next summer. But an injury to backup goalkeeper Daniel Peretz accelerated the situation. Furthermore, star keeper Manuel Neuer has increasingly struggled with fitness issues and recently missed time with a broken rip.

Although he lost his starting role to competitor Marvin Schwäbe in the first half of the season, Urbig has long been considered the most talented goalkeeper in German football. Born in Euskirchen, near Cologne, where he plays his football, Urbig is the current no.1 for Germany’s U21 side.
