West Ham United make early Jamie Leweling approach with transfer on cards
West Ham have enquired about signing Union Berlin winger Jamie Leweling, who is currently on loan at Stuttgart, with the German club under pressure, according to Sport Bild.
The German news outlet reported on 30 April that Stuttgart have a £5.1million option to buy the “dangerous” forward, but are hesitating over whether to trigger the option.
It is then reported that, if Stuttgart do not trigger their option to buy, Union could cash in on a “significantly better” deal as they would be free to negotiate with West Ham or Roma.
West Ham could sign Jamie Leweling from Union Berlin
Leweling has picked up four goals and four assists in 31 Bundesliga games so far this season to help fire Stuttgart into a surprising Champions League position as they look to hold off pressure from RB Leipzig below them.
At 23-years-old, the German still has plenty of room to grow and develop his game, with this only his second full season of regular football in the Bundesliga which has seen him become an important player for Stuttgart.
His loan club’s hesitation surrounding his future could allow the Hammers to swoop for a deal which has all the hallmarks of Tim Steidten’s transfer policy – a young player plying his trade in Europe who could be available on a cut-price deal.
While wingers do not appear to be the priority for the Hammers this summer, with a new striker and new defenders previously appearing to be the targets, the club are clearly assessing their options ahead of the transfer window.
In other West Ham news, Alphonse Areola has been called out for a “stupid mistake” he made.
