West Ham reach late night deal with Ajax for Edson Alvarez and Dutch side make big announcement over replacement

August 7, 2023

West Ham have reached a late night deal with Ajax for Edson Alvarez and the Dutch side have made a big announcement over his replacement.

The summer transfer window torture finally looks set to come to an end for West Ham.

After 54 barren days since the transfer window opened for domestic deals, the Hammers have an agreement in place for their first signing.

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for Ajax defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez in the window thus far.

Speculation that the Hammers could bring the Mexican to the London Stadium was rife when Declan Rice was on the verge of joining Arsenal.

But, as fans know only too well, nothing has come of that to date with West Ham yet to sign a single player.

This weekend Fabrizio Romano claimed that could be about to change.

The Italian transfer reporter exclusively brought news that West Ham have agreed personal terms with Ajax midfield destroyer Alvarez.

All that remained was to agree a fee with Ajax for the 25-year-old.

But there were concerns when it was reported yesterday West Ham had made a low ball opening bid of 25.9m which was rejected. Especially given reports claimed Ajax were in talks with other clubs.

Hammers fans are waking up to some good news this morning, though.

Because West Ham reached a late night deal with Ajax for Alvarez and the Dutch side have made a big announcement over his replacement.

Sky Sports Germany is reporting that West Ham have struck a deal worth between £33-34m with Ajax for Alvarez who has pushed for the move to the London Stadium.

And it is claimed he will now fly to London for his medical as soon as possible.

Significantly Ajax made a big announcement on the same day stating they have signed Croatian defensive midfielder Jakov Medic on a five-year deal.

That is the biggest sign yet that the Alvarez deal is done and shows how efficiently the Dutch giants operate.

Alvarez still has to take his medical but West Ham fans will be hoping his is the first arrival of many in the next 24 days.
