West Ham line up yet another deal after Mateus Fernandes as likely Southampton fee revealed

West Ham are now closing in on the signing of Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a big-money deal.
Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season, but did have some impressive performers as Fernandes stood out alongside new Everton signing Tyler Dibling.
West Ham desperately need legs in midfield and they will now get it, as the Portugal Under-21 International will join in the coming days, and he will not be the only arrival.
Graham Potter’s West Ham side have had a woeful start to the season with three consecutive losses, but this late flurry of spending could help them climb back up the table.
West Ham set to sign Soungoutou Magassa and Mateus Fernandes
A deal has now been agreed for Fernandes to join West Ham, with a medical lined up for the 21-year-old, and he will be joined in midfield by another new signing.
It has been reported that Fernandes will cost West Ham £35million plus “significant” add-ons, with Southampton’s previous valuation of the midfielder around £60m.
In addition to Fernandes, West Ham are also expected to sign Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco, despite late interest from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Magassa is also a central midfielder, and Potter now has a new-look midfield after James Ward-Prowse and Guido Rodriguez both delivered disastrous performances.
The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg reported via X: “West Ham are pushing for an agreement with Southampton for Mateus Fernandes.
“Belief that £35m plus significant add-ons can get it done. Confidence that Magassa signs despite late interest from Frankfurt.”
West Ham gamble on Graham Potter
This new outlay on midfielders alone could cost over £50m, but it is a clear indicator that the West Ham hierarchy believes that Potter cannot be judged with the squad in its current state.
Potter is under huge pressure at West Ham, but he also has an ageing and out-of-form squad to deal with, and a new manager may not deliver much improvement.
With this young midfield duo joining, West Ham are future-proofing their options in the middle, while also giving Potter fresh legs to work with.
If results and performances do not improve with this new investment, then Potter will likely be dismissed, but the Hammers are gambling for now that the duo will help the manager raise the levels at the London Stadium.
