West Ham 0 – 5 Liverpool | The Morning After
Perspective doesn’t make that performance, result and the ‘so what- it’s Liverpool’ shrug of the shoulders from the ownership any easier to take.
It seems my West Ham United are now a third- tier Premiership team, only expected to scrap for results against the teams in the lower reaches of the Premier League. And that hurts.
How have we got down here with such lowly ambition again ? Not long ago, the club was sixth, seventh, challenging for Europe – with a bunch of players arguably less talented than the current crop.
Is it simply a gross error of judgement by many (me included) who wanted to see David Moyes’ era over? Moyes last season and a half in the Premier League was as bad as that yesterday.
I don’t think so.
West Ham are now a team with such low expectations that the whole myth we were sold when coming to London Stadium rankles enormously. “Moving away from Upton Park would mean going to the next level, challenging for European football” we were told. Just once? That’s it?
Now we have to just accept that somewhere between, say, thirteenth and seventeenth is good enough?
Pathetic, zero ambition. Just survive in the Premier League. Stick with Lopetegui, then. That’s all he has.
I’m sad because it won’t get any better any time soon unless the board decide to wake up, raise their sights and decide that level of mediocrity isn’t good enough to serve up to 62,000-plus paying fans.
But they won’t. Because it’s good enough for them . Business first, football last.
