Tottenham close to finalising deal for Djed Spence

July 15, 2022

Middlesbrough and Tottenham Hotspur are set to finalise a deal for wing-back Djed Spence after weeks of negotiations, 90min understands.

21-year-old Spence made it clear earlier in the summer that he wanted to move back to his native London and join Spurs, shunning interest from Nottingham Forest – where he spent last season on-loan.

Spence, who was sent on-loan to Forest by then Boro boss Neil Warnock, was outstanding for Forest and his form saw him called up to the England Under-21 squad, and saw the Reds win promotion back to the Premier League.

Despite his form, he was never offered a route back to The Riverside and it quickly became apparent that he would be moving to the Premier League this summer.

Talks began more than a month ago chairmen Daniel Levy and Steve Gibson had been in disagreement over numerous aspects of the deal. Now, however, an agreement is understood to be close to being finalised.

90min now understands Tottenham hope to have Spence’s signature sealed by the weekend, enabling him to link-up with the first-team squad during their current pre-season tour of Asia.
