Throw back to when new Ireland prospect scored on Barcelona debut

August 28, 2025

He was a trailblazer!
During his squad-announcement press conference yesterday, Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed that Louie Barry was considered for selection after making an international switch.

The English-born player featured for Ireland at underage before switching back to his country of birth.

He is currently on loan at Sheffield United from his parent club Aston Villa.

It is the eighth loan move for the 22-year-old since joining their senior ranks in 2021.

However, he was once part of Barcelona’s youth set up, and the first English player to joined their famed La Masia academy.

Footage also shows the player scoring on his debut for the Spanish giants’ U19s side back in 2019, during a 6-0 hammering of Ebro.

Hallgrimsson said: “We had a big problem selecting the 23, the biggest problem since I came in. Reason being, most players are fit and well.

“Only Robbie [Brady], Max O’Leary, Andrew [Omobamidele], and [Will] Smallbone has been struggling…

“It’s a good headache for us, leaving out players like James Abankwah, Calum O’Dowda, Seamus Coleman, Jason Molumby, Andy Moran, Conor Coventry, playing well now…

“Louie Barry is another good option that we’ve been looking at. A lot of options we had for this camp, but we opted to go for this squad.”
