“They are trying” – Permanent deal in the works for Brighton player
Matt O’Riley joined Marseille on loan from Brighton in the summer.
During his time under Roberto De Zerbi, the Dane has played 20 times in all competitions. He has two goals and three assists to his name, and is considered a success.
De Zerbi is keen on keeping the 25-year-old at Marseille in the longer term, and that was always the manager’s intention.
Gianluca di Marzio has spoken to TipsBladet about O’Riley, providing insight into his situation. The Italian journalist made it clear De Zerbi initially tried to sign the player from Brighton on a permanent basis.
“I know Roberto De Zerbi really well, and he loves Matt O’Riley. He really wanted him on a permanent deal.”
Di Marzio said attempts are ongoing to sign O’Riley on a longer terms basis.
“They are trying to get Matt O’Riley’s signature on a permanent deal so they have him next season too.
“After that it depends on De Zerbi and whether he stays or not. Because he really likes him. He wants to have him with him. But everyone at the club likes him and wants to keep him.”
The midfielder had a mixed time at Brighton, partly due to injuries, and didn’t appear comfortable with Fabian Hürzeler.
Things have been better since the move to Marseille, and the player would likely be keen on a longer stay too.
