Sofyan Amrabat likely to return to Fiorentina after Man Utd loan stint
Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is most likely to return to Fiorentina following his season-long loan spell with Manchester United, according to Fiorentina News.
The 27-year-old was the subject of intense transfer speculation last summer. A number of elite European clubs were linked with him but he was determined to join the Red Devils.
Amrabat eventually joined the club for a hefty loan fee of €10 million. The hierarchy agreed an option to purchase him for €20m plus €5m in add-ons next summer.
It is now reported that there is a ‘psychological’ issue for the midfielder, who is struggling to replicate his strong international performances with the Red Devils.
The Moroccan started off as a left-back for United amid an injury crisis. He has since played in midfield, but has been unable to secure an assured starting role.
Fiorentina News report that it is ‘very probable’ that he will leave Erik ten Hag’s side when the campaign ends. He could be sold to another club by La Viola.
Amrabat still has time to impress at United
The midfielder started the season with a back injury. He made his debut from an unfamiliar left-back position before reverting to his preferred defensive midfield role.
Fiorentina last term.
Amrabat has made just four starts in the Premier League thus far. He has been good with his overall distribution but has made only 3.4 ball recoveries per appearance.
This has contributed to him dropping to the bench. In Casemiro’s absence, Scott McTominay has played the full 90 minutes from the holding midfield position in the last two league games.
McTominay is definitely not an upgrade on Amrabat and we believe the latter still has time on his hands to reclaim his starting spot from the Scotland international.
The big question is whether he can make his opportunities count. With a hectic festive schedule, Amrabat should get his fair share of starts from the number six role.
