Should Bayern Munich Sign Manuel Neuer To A New Contract?

December 20, 2024

Could Manuel Neuer renew his expiring contract until 2026? According to a report by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich and the 38-year-old goalkeeper have reached an agreement on a new contract that will run until the end of the 2025/26 season.

The report also added that Neuer remains determined and highly motivated to play at the highest level. That will certainly be necessary. After all, the back stopper is one of the highest earners at the Munich club.

“Both sides will be happy when it’s done,” director of sport said in a press conference on Thursday when asked about the contract talks with his goalkeeper. “I can’t say yet exactly when. The talks are on the right track and it’s about clarifying the last details.”

Those details will likely include the amount of money Bayern will allocate to their goalkeeper. According to Capology, Neuer is the second highest earner at the Rekordmeister behind only Harry Kane, with an annual salary of €21 million ($21.7 million).

The question has to be asked whether Neuer justifies that sort of salary going forward. While still elite at times, there have also been some noticeable signs of decline, most notably in big games.

Last season, a mistake against Real Madrid cost Bayern Munich the Champions League final. This season, Neuer was sent off in the round of 16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen after he mistimed his run to intercept Jeremie Frimpong. Bayern eventually lost that game.
