Sandro Wagner might coach Bayer Leverkusen if Xabi Alonso were to leave

October 22, 2024

Former Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner has been part of the comeback of the German national football team in the past year. He’s been Julian Nagelsmann’s right-hand man during this transformation and people have caught notice. Sandro Wagner is now reportedly on Bayer Leverkusen’s if Xabi Alonso were to leave the club.

Surely almost impossible shoes to fill based on Alonso’s tenure with the club so far, but nonetheless, they would need someone and Wagner has been building a solid resume in the past few years. However, Wagner is under contract alongside Nagelsmann until after the 2026 World Cup.

It shouldn’t be ruled out though that he would consider leaving to become a head coach elsewhere if strong options presented themself. However, that would likely happen next summer, as Wagner would not likely jump ship in last preparations for the World Cup.

Wagner surely has a future in coaching ahead of him, could the DFB even consider promoting him to head coach of the national team if Nagelsmann were to leave after 2026? Who knows. One certain thing is that there is never a lack of movement in managers these days.
