Real Madrid’s 21-year-old attacking midfielder will not join La Liga club on loan

July 16, 2023

Real Madrid have hit the jackpot with Brazilian talents multiple times in recent years. Rodrygo Goes, Vinicius Jr, and Eder Militao were all picked up early by the club scouts, and have now become critical parts of Carlo Ancelotti’s dynamics.

Not every stone thrown, however, has turned to gold. One of the best examples is Reinier Jesus.

The Brazilian star was picked up by Los Blancos early in his development from Flamengo. He arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu when he was just 18 years of age and was seen as one of the brightest upcoming attacking midfielders.

But things have not worked out for him at the Spanish capital club. After spending the last three seasons away on loan, the management is again looking for a way out for the 21-year-old. And Reports earlier this week claimed interest from Girona in re-signing the youngster on loan.

But, Mario Cortegana puts an end to that speculation, stating that Reinier will not join Michel’s side.

Since his €30 million move to Real Madrid, Reinier is yet to make his debut for the first team. He spent two years on loan at Borussia Dortmund before returning to Madrid only to be sent to Girona.

In 18 La Liga appearances for the Catalans last season, the 21-year-old scored two goals and provided one assist. Further, he averaged a mere 0.4 key passes per game and missed two big chances in his limited participation.

His injury-riddled loan stint with the La Liga side ended last month and the Brazilian is currently participating in pre-season under Ancelotti.

The Italian tactician does not see the Brazilian as part of his plans heading into the new season. After all, the competition in the middle of the park at Real Madrid is already unforgiving. Moreover, he has not shown enough on his loan spells to claim a role with the Merengues.

As such, a return to Girona looked possible, with the report from The Athletic stating that there was an agreement in principle between the clubs for the 21-year-old to move to Montilivi.

But Girona have now decided to pull out from the deal as they have informed Reinier that they will be needing the non-EU spot in their squad for a different player who can replace the Barcelona-bound Oriol Romeu.

As such, Los Blancos will now have to widen their radar and look for alternate suitors.
