Real Madrid star overtakes Lionel Messi in World Cup record books

June 17, 2026

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has on Tuesday continued to etch his name ever further into the history books of international football.

This comes owing to his latest goal haul in the colours of France.

Didier Deschamps’ troops marked their return to action a short time ago, kicking the country’s World Cup campaign into gear in a meeting with Senegal.

The aforementioned Mbappé featured from the off in the fixture, leading a star-studded Les Bleus’ frontline.

And en route to an eventual 3-1 triumph, the 27-year-old proved himself the star of the show. After opening the scoring midway through the 2nd-half, Mbappé put the finishing touches on an outing to remember with his 2nd deep into injury time.

The Real Madrid standout, in turn, has overtaken Olivier Giroud as the French national team’s all-time top goalscorer.

Not only that, but Mbappé has inched ever closer to becoming the leading goal-getter in World Cup history, now clear of both Pelé and Lionel Messi, and just two goals adrift of Miroslav Klose.
