Rangers to face Servette in Champions League third round qualifier after dramatic Genk victory

August 3, 2023

Michael Beale’s men will face the Swiss side in their pursuit of group stage action in the Champions League after red card and penalty shootout drama saw Servette sneak past the Belgians.

Rangers will face Swiss side Servette in the Champions League third round qualifier this month after a dramatic victory over Genk last night.

The Belgians welcomed their opponents for the second leg having finished 1-1 in the first leg, and things took a surprise turn inside the opening stages when Servette were handed a red card.

It would be far from the end of the drama however despite Enzo Crivelli’s dismissal, as Mike Trésor scored a penalty to put Genk ahead on the night and on aggregate.

Timothé Cognat quickly levelled for Servette, and it was the same story in the second-half when Tolu Arokodare restored Genk’s lead.

Chris Bedia made it 3-3 on aggregate with his strike just after the hour mark, and after 120 minutes neither side could be separated.

The Swiss outfit would then go on to win 4-1 on penalties and seal their place in the next round where they will face Michael Beale’s new-look Rangers side.

Servette will travel to Glasgow for the first leg on Wednesday, August 9 before hosting the Gers the following week on Tuesday, August 15.
