PSV Eindhoven lead race to sign Sergino Dest
Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven are interested in signing out-of-favour Barcelona defender Sergino Dest in the ongoing transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Sergino Dest is the subject of interest from PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch giants want to sign the Barcelona outcast on loan in the ongoing transfer window. And they are in the pole position to secure his services ahead of OGC Nice and English clubs.
Sergino Dest is a native of Almere in the Netherlands. And he began his youth career at his hometown club before joining Ajax in 2012. The USMNT international subsequently progressed through the ranks before making his first-team debut in July 2019. And after a breakthrough 2019/20 campaign, he completed a dream move to Barcelona in October 2020.
Barcelona shelled out around €21 million to secure Dest’s services three years ago. But the move has not worked out, even though the youngster enjoyed a decent debut season. The 22-year-old saw his stock dropping as soon as Xavi Hernandez took charge of the Barcelona first team.
So it was hardly surprising when Barcelona loaned him out to AC Milan last summer. But the stint with the Rossoneri was a dud as Dest managed only 632 minutes of game time in his 14 outings for the Serie A giants. And the young full-back does not feature in Xavi’s plans, with Barcelona looking to part ways with him this summer.
Dest’s next destination might be PSV Eindhoven, coincidentally his first opponent as an Ajax player four years ago. And the report claims that the Dutch giants lead the race to sign the Barcelona outcast this summer. But their interest in the 22-year-old is surprising, considering the options in Peter Bosz’s squad.
The PSV Eindhoven boss has three right-backs in his squad. So it is unclear how Dest might fit into the scheme of things. Nonetheless, the Dutch giants are the front-runners to land the USMNT international in a loan deal. PSV will also pay most of his €10.7 million-a-year wages.
The 22-year-old was also a target for English clubs and OGC Nice. But returning to the familiar environment of the Eredivisie might help him resurrect his career. Meanwhile, Barcelona will hope Dest has a successful career so they can recoup most of the €21 million they paid to sign him three years ago.
