Precise nature of assistant coach Paul Nevin’s role at West Ham is clarified as Mark Warburton is latest to leave

The precise nature of assistant coach Paul Nevin’s role at West Ham has been clarified as Mark Warburton is the latest to leave.

It was announced on Thursday that Mark Warburton was departing West Ham after just one year with the club.

He becomes the latest assistant coach to leave West Ham following the departures in consecutive summers of Alan Irvine and then Stuart Pearce.

It remains to be seen whether David Moyes now looks to bring in another replacement to join him, Paul Nevin, Kevin Nolan, Billy McKinlay and Xavi Valero in West Ham’s senior management team.

The shared responsibility of West Ham’s first team coaching staff

The West Ham first team staff setup has always been an intriguing setup. There appears on the surface to be no clear number two in the traditional sense.

Shared responsibility seems to be the best way to describe how Moyes has his coaching team aligned.

Although earlier this season supposed first team whistleblower alleged Moyes minimised the input of his assistants.

They each have the same title – ‘assistant coach’.

Many have assumed Nevin is closest to being West Ham’s assistant manager in a traditional sense as he is regularly seen speaking to Moyes on the touchline during games and has the added gravitas of being part of Gareth Southgate’s England coaching staff too.

But there have also been suggestions that Nevin and Nolan are mainly responsible for set pieces.

The departure of Warburton has cast the spotlight back on the West Ham coaching staff.

Now the precise nature of assistant coach Nevin’s role at West Ham has been clarified as Warburton is latest to leave.

Nevin sat down for a lengthy interview with The Athletic in the wake of West Ham’s European triumph.

And his very particular role in the West Ham machine was outlined.

“Nevin is responsible for the preparation of training and is entrusted with creation and delivery in attacking set plays — and analysing opponents’ dead-ball routines,” the report states.

“He is often stood next to Moyes in the technical area on match day and has become a key confidant.”

It will be interesting to see whether Moyes has a replacement lined up for Warburton over the summer.
