Newcastle want £20m player who was better than Rice at World Cup

May 31, 2023

Newcastle United may turn to relegated Premier League players in their search for new recruits this summer, which could lead them to Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

The 24-year-old, who has been linked with Newcastle before, missed the end of the season due to injury, meaning he was powerless to stop Leeds dropping into the Championship on the final day of the season.

Relegation could lead to an exodus at Elland Road, and Adams is one player who could now be on the move.

Newcastle an option to sign Tyler Adams

According to 90min, Adams is likely to leave Leeds this summer after just one year with the club. He joined last summer from RB Leipzig, costing £20million.

The report states that Leeds have accepted that he is one player they will likely have to sell following relegation.

90min add that Adams is a target for four Premier League clubs, with Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all potential suitors.

The report also states that the USA international is attracting interest from Germany, Italy and Spain, but his potential price tag means that staying in England is likely.

While signing a player from a relegated club would hardly scream ambition, Adams could prove to be a shrewd addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Could be an astute option for Newcastle

The Magpies are looking for midfield reinforcements, and Adams is someone who could play the defensive ‘number six’ role. He has the energy and tactical awareness to thrive defensively, while he is also strong in possession. That is why Leeds bought him last year, as he was brought in to replace Kalvin Phillips.

Adams operates in a similar role, which is why he could be a good fit for Newcastle. He also has European experience, which could be useful to Howe.

Newcastle saw firsthand what Adams is like this season. He produced a battling performance at St James’ Park, standing up to every Magpies player and showing the heart and desire that would not make him look out of place in a black and white shirt.

USA teammate Tim Ream has summed up why he is such a good teammate, and his comments make Adams sound like a really good fit for this incarnation of Newcastle United.

“He makes everyone’s job a little bit easier,” Ream said.

“His energy, his tenacity, his work rate, it’s just incredible, what he does on a football pitch.”

Ream’s words are similar to how Toon fans would describe Sean Longstaff, and we know exactly how important he has been this season.

We have seen Adams showcase those battling qualities on the international stage, having excelled against England at the World Cup in Qatar. He was exceptional in the 0-0 draw, and even outperformed Declan Rice – another name linked with a move to Newcastle.

On his performance against England, Chris Sutton said: “The defensive midfielder who impressed the most in this match was [the] tireless Tyler Adams of Leeds. He was here, there and everywhere. Rice wasn’t.”

With Howe needing more depth after Champions League qualification, we could certainly do a lot worse than Adams.
