Newcastle United get Dominic Calvert-Lewin update as next transfer priority highlighted

July 8, 2025

Newcastle United are advancing towards Anthony Elanga as their first summer signing with a £55million transfer being agreed. This comes shortly after striker Callum Wilson’s departure was officially confirmed.

The Magpies’ No.9 had rejected the offer of an incentivised contract and leaves on a free transfer. It brings an end to his five-year stay at St James’ Park, during which he scored 49 goals in 130 appearances, but while sadness for the loss of such a servant may presently be felt, the fact there is still much to do before the season begins means the focus won’t take long to shift.

Alexander Isak is left as Newcastle’s only senior striker returning for pre-season as losing out to Chelsea for Joao Pedro cost Eddie Howe his primary target in that position. A winger has, similarly, been high on the club’s agenda – with options explored after walking away from Bryan Mbeumo.

So with expectation growing to get fresh players, especially attackers, through the door – those with an ability to make an impact in both the Premier League and Champions League – Chronicle Live analyses the latest headlines from St James’ Park;

Calvert-Lewin talks
Newcastle have again been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The former Everton striker is on the lookout for a new club this summer. However, as Chronicle Live reported last week, Newcastle’s initial stance on Calvert-Lewin was a polite ‘no thank you’ – despite ongoing links elsewhere.

Calvert-Lewin is now a free agent after the striker’s contract with the Toffees expired this summer. National radio station talkSPORT have reported that Newcastle have an interest in signing Calvert-Lewin, who was also apparently interesting Premier League rivals Manchester United.
