Mohamed Salah injury truth as Liverpool FC dealt AFCON blow in Man City title race
Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah picked up an injury during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday evening
Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah has an anxious wait ahead of him to discover the extent of the injury that forced him off during Egypt’s 2-2 draw against Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Salah came off on the stroke of half-time after bursting forward during a counter attack. Soon afterward, the 31-year-old had pulled up and appeared to be in some discomfort.
Eventually, the decision was made to bring Salah off the field with his country going 1-0 down moments later. Following the action in Abidjan, Egypt’s head coach Rui Vitoria spoke to the media about his captain’s health where he admitted the issue was ‘not dangerous’ on first look.
He explained: “I hope not (a big problem). We don’t know yet what the problem is.
“I hope it’s not a big problem but it was a problem in the first half. It was difficult timing for us because, in the second half, we could only make two substitutions. But now, I don’t know. It’s early to see something, I think it’s not dangerous but let’s see if Salah recovers.”
While Manchester City will not wish ill on a player, any long-term injury for Salah could undeniably work to the Blues’ advantage. Salah has already bagged 18 goals in 27 appearances for Liverpool this season and the winger remains the focal point of the Merseyside club’s attack.
City currently sit two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s team at the top of the Premier League having played the same number of matches. By the end of the weekend, Liverpool will have played a game more when they travel to AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.
