Mikel Arteta makes Arsenal squad train while listening to ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

August 3, 2022

Footage has emerged from the upcoming Amazon Prime docuseries ‘All or Nothing: Arsenal’ showing Mikel Arteta playing Liverpool anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ during a training session.

The highly anticipated series is set to be released on Thursday 4 August and will follow the Gunners during their 2021/22 Premier League season – a campaign which ended in disappointment due to their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

In the latest footage released ahead of the full series being made available on Amazon Prime, manager Arteta orders a coach to bring two speakers onto the training ground so that he can play ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ during the session.

“One of my crazy ideas, today they are going to train with, in the background, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’,” says Arteta in the clip, with one of his assistant coaches agreeing that it is a good idea.

The Arsenal manager then goes on to explain why he is playing Liverpool’s club anthem in the training drill, stating: “There is a word we use in Spain in cycling when a cyclist is going and looks amazing and, in one kilometre, he goes [Arteta gestures downward with his hand]. He looks stuck, and it’s a word called ‘bajara’.

“I had it once at Anfield. The game was going well and suddenly I could only see red shirts flying around, the game was passing all over me and I cannot react. People were saying ‘what is he doing?’ and I’m like ‘I cannot do it’ – I cannot emotionally, physically, I cannot cope. Everything was too fast. I only had that feeling in my career once and it was at Anfield.”

On the training ground Arteta then shouts ‘We are at Anfield! Let’s go!’ and the Liverpool anthem begins to play – seemingly to make the players feel that they are playing Liverpool at Anfield in order to prepare them mentally for the game.

Despite Arteta’s best efforts, Arsenal’s Premier League trip to Anfield last season ended in a 4-0 defeat for the Gunners.
