Mason Greenwood could face Prem teams in Champions League as LaLiga giants ‘enquire’

January 2, 2024

Mason Greenwood could be playing Premier League teams again next season with Atletico Madrid reportedly enquiring about him.

The Manchester United loanee, 22, has been impressing in Spain in the first half of his season-long spell at Getafe. He has three goals and four assists in his 14 top-flight appearances so far.

His form is attracting interest around Europe and according to Marca, that includes from Atletico. It’s claimed they have Greenwood on their radar ahead of the summer transfer window having been long-time admirers.

Diego Simeone’s side are on course for their 13th straight season in Europe’s premier competition, sitting third in the table as we near the halfway stage.

Should they qualify and sign Greenwood from the Red Devils, he could face an English side for the first time since January 2021 – his last outing for United before his suspension.

There could be a transfer battle for the one-time England international, however, with Atletico’s rivals Barcelona also believed to be interested.

While Barca’s financial situation won’t help their cause, they’re set to be in need of attacking reinforcements come the summer. And they reckon £40million could be enough to sign him.

It’s claimed they could even offer him Lionel Messi’s old No. 10 shirt to convince him to pick them. Greenwood contract will have one year remaining.

It remains to be seen whether United will sell their academy product for profit. Their internal investigation into his dropped sexual assault charges determined he was best continuing his career elsewhere, but they prolonged the issue by only loaning him instead of getting him off their books altogether.
