Manchester United legends get back together to celebrate 30 years since winning their first ever Premier League title

January 29, 2023

One Manchester United legend left fans stunned after sharing a photo on Twitter of some of his former team-mates as they marked 30 years since winning the first Premier League title.

But despite sparking one of the most dominant periods in football history, the team of 1992-93 are almost unrecognisable now, three decades on from their landmark triumph.

One former Red Devils star previously shocked fans with his appearance after sharing a pint with a fan in a Manchester pub, and they were present alongside their former colleagues at Saturday’s reunion as well.

The photo that Lee Sharpe posted featured eight of his ex-colleagues, although some may have been more recognisable than others following high-profile managerial roles.

Snapped on the back row, from left to right, are Bryan Robson, Clayton Blackmore, Mike Phelan, Gary Pallister and Sharpe.

The front row features Brian McClair, Mark Hughes, Denis Irwin and Paul Parker.

Robson captained the side to that Premier League win 30 years ago, and was one of the most iconic to every wear the armband in the club’s long history.

Having led the side for 12 years – as well as captaining England 65 times – Robson left United in 1994, but was voted their greatest ever player in 2011.

Hughes is currently ninth on the clubs’ all-time goalscoring list with 163 from 467 games, while Irwin has the ninth-most appearances for the club with 529 – only 17 more than current goalkeeper David de Gea.

Robson, Phelan and Hughes all went on to take charge of their own sides after hanging up their boots, with the Welsh forward currently employed by Bradford City.

For Parker, Pallister and Irwin, punditry and television presenting called, while Blackmore’s brief managerial career in his home country of Wales came to an end in 2007 after just two appointments.

But for Sharpe, retirement has brought about a bizarre switch of codes, with the former defender now competing in professional golf tournaments as of 2021.

Phelan notably spent eight years across two spells as the club’s assistant manager, and took charge of the reserves for two years, with McClair spending nine years as Director for the Youth Academy.

Of all those who were part of the 1992-93 reunion, only Irwin was still with the club six years later when they sealed that memorable treble by lifting the Champions League in 1999.

Although legendary players at the club in their own rights, the emergences of players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and the rest of the famed Class of 1992 brought in a new generation to the club.

But the side that lifted the first ever Premier League trophy in May 1993 will always be remembered, after they broke the Red Devils 26-year wait to finish top of the pile in the top-flight.

The club has since gone on to win a record 12 more Premier Leagues.
