Man Utd may soon have new-look XI with £40m Brazilian and three more Ratcliffe signings

March 22, 2024

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to make a big splash in his first summer transfer window with Manchester United.

Manchester United’s XI for next season could be unrecognisable if Sir Jim Ratcliffe gets his wish. The Red Devils have already eyed Wolves’ £40million-rated midfielder Joao Gomes as a Casemiro replacement and more signings could be set to follow as the INEOS chief looks to make a statement in his first summer transfer window. Here, Express Sport takes a look at how the team could shape up for next season.

Having splashed out £47m to bring Andre Onana from Inter Milan to United last year, it is unlikely that a new goalkeeper will be prioritised with several other areas deemed a more pressing issue.

The Senegalese stopper has not had the perfect debut campaign in the Premier League, but it would be unlikely for either Erik ten Hag or a new head coach to cast Onana aside so quickly.

Two new signings could be brought in by Ratcliffe and co, starting with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. The England Under-21 international has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Sean Dyche and with the Toffees under financial pressure due to profit and sustainability rules, could be forced to cash in.

He would be the long-term successor to Raphael Varane, and could potentially be joined in the back four by right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong has excelled as a top-class attacking wing-back who could provide further impetus going forward down that flank with Alejandro Garnacho or another new signing.

In turn, Diogo Dalot could cover both full-back spots amid lingering injury concerns over both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
