Man Utd dressing room set target for new season and explain what has gone wrong

Mason Mount has revealed that Manchester United’s squad is setting their sights on a swift return to European competition following their failure to secure Champions League qualification. A defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao last May compounded their fate for 2025/26.

The loss, coupled with United’s poorest league performance in over half a century, finishing 15th in the Premier League, has left Old Trafford bereft of European football next term for only the second time in 35 years. Mount emphasised that reclaiming a spot in Europe is the top priority for the upcoming season.

“We obviously want to be back in Europe,” Mount declared. “I think that’s a massive, massive thing for the club.”

Mount also highlighted the team’s ambition to compete in the Champions League, acknowledging the challenge posed by the competitive nature of the Premier League. “I’d say Europe. I think that’s the focus. The Champions League would be amazing for us. As a group – and as players – we want to be playing in that competition.

“So that’s the goal. We know how difficult that is now in the Premier League. There are so many teams that are obviously investing and playing very good football at the moment.”

In preparation for the new season, Mount mentioned that manager Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff have meticulously dissected last season’s shortcomings to ensure a strong start. “It’s the small details here and there that really affect that at the top of the league,” Mount explained.
