Liverpool transfer news as André keeps promise and Man City sets Kalvin Phillips price

October 30, 2023

Liverpool’s good form to the season continues. Since the resumption of the club game following the end of the last international break, Jürgen Klopp’s side has beaten Everton in the Merseyside derby, demolished French side Toulouse in the Europa League, and seen off the challenge of Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

All appears rosy in Klopp’s garden. In comparison to the struggles of last season, the German’s rejuvenated side are firing on all cylinders, the goals are coming from everywhere, and the midfield is in much better shape, an area which was the major downfall for the team in 2022/23.

Klopp’s side now sit three points off the top of the table following the victory against Forest. Tottenham is surprisingly maintaining its lead atop the Premier League mountain after 10 games, but whether it can go the distance is anyone’s guess.

As ever, despite the transfer window not opening for another two months, the rumor mill never stops churning. Liverpool continues to be linked with new signings on a daily basis. Some have elements of truth to them, while others harder to believe.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, we have it all covered on Liverpool.com. Here is our verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

André (Fluminense)
Liverpool was heavily linked with a move for André last summer, but the midfielder decided to stay with Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense in the end. Given it is just 90 minutes away from a historic first Copa Libertadores title, that decision seems well-founded.

The player has now spoken out about an ‘offer’ he recieved from a European club, and opened up the door to a January departure. “There’s a lot of things in the last window that I didn’t talk about it,” he told the official CONMEBOL Libertadores channel.

“It was really [an offer] I couldn’t refuse, the club, the league. Every player dreams to play for a big European club, [in a] big European league.

“I decided to keep my word and stay, because when the January window closed, [manager Fernando] Diniz told me he wanted me until the end of the year.” That tallies with reporting that Fluminense had no intention to sell until after the conclusion of the Copa Libertadores.

Liverpool.com says: Considering Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores showdown with Boca Juniors on November 4, André’sdecision to remain with his current side seems justified. Whether Liverpool was indeed the side who made the offer for the 22-year-old remains to be seen, yet securing the midfielder in January would be a further boost to Klopp and complete the rejuvenation of midfield.

Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City)
The English midfielder’s move across the Pennines hasn’t worked out quite like Phillips had hoped. The 27-year-old joined from Leeds in the summer of 2022, but has scarcely kicked a ball under Pep Guardiola.
