La Liga chief makes Lionel Messi admission as he takes MLS by storm

September 8, 2023

The outspoken Spanish league president has waded into the debate over whether the Argentine superstar will eventually return to Barcelona to finish his glittering career

La Liga president Javier Tebas has discussed Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona and offered an indication over whether the Argentine icon would return to the Nou Camp one last time to end his career.

The outspoken Spanish league chief has waded into the debate regarding whether Inter Miami will be the Argentine icon’s final club. The superstar forward came very close to a return to Camp Nou earlier this year, with his father Jorge even holding a meeting with Blaugrana officials.

“I wish he had come to Spanish football and never gone to PSG. The end of this film has been sad between Messi and Spanish football.”

If Tebas’ comments are anything to go by, it appears as though there are no plans for Messi to ever return to Barcelona, where he spent the majority of his career. At a press conference in Buenos Aires, the La Liga chief addressed the subject, while expressing his own regret that a deal to bring him back to Catalonia was not completed.

Speaking recently, the veteran megastar was open about his desire to seek out a quieter life in Miami. He said: “If the Barcelona thing didn’t work out, I wanted to leave Europe, get out of the spotlight and think more for my family.”

The former Barcelona hero added: “I had offers from other European teams but I didn’t even evaluate them because my idea was to go to Barcelona and, if that didn’t come about, then leaving European football after winning the World Cup was what I needed.”

Irrespective of his enduring quality, at 37-years-old there is no getting away from the fact that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s years are advancing. His switch stateside during the summer represents the first time the World Cup victor has played for a team outside of Europe.

Ultimately, the decision of the world-famous player to move to Inter Miami looks to have been inspired, with Messi having already won silverware stateside. Putting his PSG woes behind him, he has already scored a staggering 11 goals in as many games, while winning the Leagues Cup.
