Kylian Mbappe Criticised For ‘Ugly Gesture’ After Barcelona Beat Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup Final

January 12, 2026

Kylian Mbappe has come under fire for an “ugly gesture” following Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday evening. Despite the Frenchman finding goals easy to come by since his move from Paris Saint-Germain two summers ago, he is still waiting to meaningfully add to his trophy haul, with Los Blancos managing only a UEFA Super Cup across the past two campaigns.

Under Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid have struggled to sweep up major honours in the manner they once did during Carlo Ancelotti’s time in charge at the Bernabeu. Instead, they have been left to watch Barcelona assume that role. La Blaugrana completed a domestic treble last season, and this weekend felt like a natural continuation of their growing dominance over their fiercest rivals.

El Clasico has rarely been short of bad blood in recent years, with Lamine Yamal previously branding Real Madrid “thieves”. This time, however, it was Mbappe who stoked the rivalry further, appearing to instruct his teammates not to form a guard of honour for Barcelona at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
