Juventus unable to agree terms with AS Roma over Nicolo Zaniolo deal

July 20, 2022

Juventus have been unable to agree terms with AS Roma over the signing of talented midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, 90min understands.

La Vecchia Signora were confident of finalising a deal for Zaniolo last week, but their offer of a loan swap which included midfield outcast Arthur Melo has been declined by the capital club.

The creative midfielder scored six goals in Roma’s successful UEFA Europa Conference League campaign last season, including the winner in the final. The 2021/22 campaign was Zaniolo’s first full one since a second anterior ligament injury.

Following the blockbuster signing of free agent Paulo Dybala – a deal which was confirmed on Wednesday – 90min understands that Roma believe they can convince Zaniolo to stay the club. Jose Mourinho has held talks with the player about potentially remaining at Stadio Olimpico, and has suggested playing the attacking midfielder as a wing-back.

With Juve’s move for the Italy international being scuppered, Tottenham have re-emerged as a contender for his signature. Spurs’ managing director of football Fabio Paratici is in talks with Roma regarding a potential deal.

Earlier in the transfer window, 90min reported that Tottenham – like Juventus – were keen to offer players in any bid to sign Zaniolo, with Wales international Joe Rodon being one of the players discussed. Rodon was signed under Mourinho at Tottenham, but has scarcely featured during his time in north London.
