Juventus chief’s incredible comments about Aussie coach: ‘That is crazy’
Juventus Women sporting director Stefano Braghin’s press conference showed the impact made by Joe Montemurro after the A-Leagues great signed a two-year contract extension.
History-making Australian head coach Montemurro penned a new deal 2026 as Juventus prepare for their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
Never in the history of Juventus Women’s team had they completed the treble. There were doubles, but never a sweep of domestic honours. Not to mention a run to the Champions League quarter-finals.
But A-League Women Championship-winning coach Montemurro changed that in his first season at the helm in 2021-22 as Juve claimed Serie A, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles while also made it through to the last eight of the Champions League.
Last season was more challenging, dethroned by Roma in Serie A, though the Italian juggernaut did clinch another Coppa Italia crown.
“It’s certainly a tribute to the sporting project that he started two years ago and that has yielded brilliant results on the pitch,” said Braghin.
“2021-22 was the best season in the club’s history, winning the treble and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.
“Last year we finished second, which some people may turn their nose up at, whereas for many that would be a lifetime goal.
“We won the Coppa Italia and our Champions League journey was in a very tough group which we only lost once and conceded three goals.
“Credit to everyone for the hard work day in, day out, from the sort of real leader Joe is to all other collaborators at Vinovo.
“We’ve managed to achieve this sporting goal and hope to keep it going while improving further in the future if possible.”
Montemurro, who led Arsenal to Women’s Super League glory in 2018-19, previously coached Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City in Australia.
He created history in 2015-16 after City went through the entire women’s campaign without dropping a point.
“I’m happy to be part of this family and I look forward to continuing the work I started two years ago,” Montemurro said.
“I want to thank the club and, specifically, Stefano Braghin for this opportunity to continue together.”
Juve are set to face FC Okzhetpes in their opening Champions League qualifier in Frankfurt.
