Josip Juranovic continues post-Celtic success with first league goal but Union suffer heartbreak

March 13, 2023

A return to league action at the weekend saw Union tasked with taking on mid table Wolfsburg after Juranovic had scored in the Europa League in midweek

Josip Juranovic capped off a big week for new club Union Berlin with a vital penalty on Sunday.

The former Celtic star’s new life in the German capital has been impressive for Die Eisernen as the Berlin outfit continue to defy expectations in the Bundesliga. Thursday night saw Juranovic’s dead-ball specialities prove vital when he pinged a stunning free-kick in to the net against Union Saint Gilloise in the Europa League in a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

But a return to league action at the weekend saw Union tasked with taking on mid table Wolfsburg, but Urs Fischer’s side could only manage a draw. Yet the Croatian defender was key again, netting his first Bundesliga goal from the penalty spot in convincing fashion.

Juranovic’s new club, however, conceded a deflected goal seven minutes from time, meaning they now sit seven points adrift of dominant Bayern Munich at the top but level with RB Leipzig on 50 points.

Union travel to France on Thursday for the second leg of the Europa League tie with hopes of reaching the last eight in which they could be set for a glamour tie with Manchester United or Arsenal.
