Jamie Carragher makes ‘unforgivable’ Darwin Nunez claim and spots Mohamed Salah Liverpool concern
Latest Liverpool news and gossip as Jamie Carragher offers his verdicts on Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez after the Reds lost to Everton in the Premier League clash at Goodison Park
Jamie Carragher has explained why Liverpool may have decisions to make over the futures of Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.
Wednesday night saw the Reds suffer a 2-0 defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby. The result dealt a major blow to Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League in the title race against Manchester City and Arsenal.
Nunez had one chance in the first half to get Liverpool on the score sheet, but he directed his effort straight at Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Salah endured a quiet evening in front of goal, and that has led to Carragher raising questions about the duo.
Carragher was critical of Nunez for the chance he missed to get Liverpool back in the game, with the scoreline 1-0 to Everton at the time. The Reds legend went on to express concern over Salah’s form in recent weeks.
“The chance that Nunez misses before half-time, that is unforgivable at this level,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the full-time whistle. “That is not acceptable at this level, certainly when Liverpool are going for the title.
“I actually thought at the start of the second half, Liverpool were in control of the game and I thought a goal was coming. I thought if Liverpool scored one, they would go and get two.
“I thought they started the second half really well and then Mo Salah gave the ball away and Liverpool should defend the corner a lot better again, but Mo Salah gave the ball away and he has looked a shadow of his former self for a lot of this season, especially since he has come back from injury.
“He is Liverpool’s legend, superstar, one of the all-time greats, but he has been so far off it. As soon as it was 2-0, it felt there was no way for Liverpool to get back into the game and they did run out of ideas.”
Carragher then went on to explain why there may be serious cause for concern around Nunez’s form. The Reds signed the Uruguayan from Benfica two years ago in a deal potentially worth up to £85.5 million, with Nunez scoring 33 goals in 91 appearances since his move to Anfield.
After the defeat to Everton, Carragher hinted that Liverpool could have a decision to make regarding Nunez’s future this summer. The former Reds defender went on to explain why he does not believe Nunez has the potential to improve based on what he has seen over the last two seasons.
“I think I’m at the stage now with Nunez where I don’t think there is a question to ask,” Carragher said. “I think after two years at the club – and I have been guilty of this – you want him to do well because there is so much that you like because he gives everything, he runs and causes trouble and gets the odd goal and gets an assist.
“But after two years when Liverpool this season are going to the title and those big games, you need your man to score away at Old Trafford, away at Goodison, in the European game at Atalanta. There is no time to waste, this is not October or November. This is the business end of the title.”
