‘it Always Hurts’ – Harry Kane Rues Late Bayer Leverkusen Equaliser, Vows to Improve for Bayern Munich

September 17, 2023

Harry Kane could do nothing to prevent Bayern Munich dropping two key points in an early season top-of-the-Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen, having been substituted before Exequiel Palacios converted a hotly-disputed penalty to level the scores in the 94th minute. Kane said afterwards that he feels he “can improve with my all-round play” as he continues to adjust to life in Germany.

Harry Kane was powerless to prevent Bayern Munich conceding a 94th-minute equaliser against Bayer Leverkusen in their 2-2 draw on Friday night and the England captain admitted afterwards: “it hurts”.

Kane had scored the opener for Bayern after just seven minutes, his fourth goal in as many matches for his new club, but was substituted in the 85th minute with the German champions leading 2-1.

Exequiel Palacios converted a stoppage-time penalty spot to ensure that the entertaining clash between the perennial German powerhouse that is Bayern and Xabi Alonso’s exciting dark-horse title contenders Leverkusen finished with honours even, after VAR intervened to award the spot-kick.

For Kane, it was difficult to take.

He said: “It always hurts when you concede like this in the last minute with this type of decision.”

Manager Thomas Tuchel was also frustrated.

He said: “The result is fair. But if you take the lead in the 86th you should get the three points even if a draw would be the fair result.”

The draw was the first setback suffered by Bayern so far this season in the Bundesliga, while the German Super Cup also saw a disappointing 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig.

Happily for Bayern though, Kane believes that he is still finding his feet after making the switch from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer and suggested after the match that his best is yet to come.

He explained: “Of course I’m always happy to score, overall I’m still just getting to know the team, I think I can improve with my all-round play.

“That’s going to come – it’s just part and parcel of football. I feel with every training session and every game, I’m getting to know my team mates more.
