Last season, Martinez and Thuram were key players for Inter. That would be an understatement.
Captain Martinez was Inter’s top scorer for the third season in a row. And in fact, he was the top scorer in all of Serie A for the first time in his career.
Meanwhile, Thuram was just as important for the Nerazzurri.
The Frenchman may not have scored quite as prolifically as Martinez. But he assisted more goals, and also made it a welcome habit to score in big matches.
And beyond the goals from Martinez and Thuram, the pair formed a strong understanding on the pitch that made Inter into a very effective attacking unit.
The attacking play from the two strikers is a key feature of Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 formation.
Inter Welcome Return To Form Of Lautaro Martinez & Marcus Thuram
At the start of this season, Martinez and Thuram have yet to really function as a devastating strike partnership the way they so often did last season.
Thuram got the season off to a blazing start, with four goals before the September international break.
But Inter captain Martinez got off to a very sluggish start to the season. Lack of fitness played a big role as the Argentine failed to score in Inter’s first few matches of the season.
But a brace against Udinese last weekend seemed to unlock Martinez.
And the captain made it three on the season as he came off the bench to score against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League in midweek.
