I spotted what Erik ten Hag did at full-time in Manchester United vs Chelsea – it said everything

April 6, 2024

The manager is under pressure to save his season with Man United’s Champions League hopes fading.

Manchester United managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in a frantic match against Chelsea that ended in a 4-3 loss.

The visitors were seconds away from three points when Diogo Dalot felled Noni Madueke in the final minute of eight added on. Cole Palmer fired in the spot kick before hammering home an effort in the 111th minute via a huge deflection off Scott McTominay to grab the points.

Conor Gallagher and Palmer had put Chelsea 2-0 up before Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes squared the game before half-time. Garnacho headed home from a superb Antony cross on 67 minutes before the late heartbreak.

United are now 11 points off the top four and nine points behind fifth-placed Tottenham. Here are three things United fans may have missed during the game.

Erik ten Hag reaction at full-time

Erik ten Hag went straight down the tunnel after full-time, not shaking hands with Mauricio Pochettino. The Dutchman was aggrieved that eight minutes had been added on in the first place and lamented the two stoppage-time goals.

His reaction shows how dismayed he was at how the match was thrown away by his side. This is a manager under pressure for not being able to correct the mistakes that have cost his team so dearly this season.

Maguire advice highlights downfall

Harry Maguire urged Diogo Dalot to “stay down” when he was on the floor to try and eat up the minutes in added time. While this gamesmanship in itself can be debated, the overall notion about a lack of game management from United can be pulled upon.

United saw experienced heads Casemiro, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans all withdrawn before the end and the lack of a stable character cost them in the end.

Lesson for Kambwala

Willy Kambwala came on for his seventh career appearance after substitute Evans had to go off 20 minutes into the second half. The 19-year-old put in a sturdy performance and made a series of good blocks and clearances.

In the 82nd minute, the centre-back diverted a low cross behind for a corner and gestured with his hands to the home fans to calm down. He can hold his head up high for his personal display but the final 19 minutes is a lesson on staying focused on the game until the final whistle.
