HOW BORUSSIA DORTMUND’S MIDFIELD COULD LOOK NEXT SEASON

June 27, 2023

Borussia Dortmund will have a new look to their midfield for the 2023/24 season following the departure of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid. With possible departures and still expected arrivals in the summer transfer window, Dortmund are exploring several options heading into the coming campaign.

Borussia Dortmund are working on a deal to bring Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha (22) to the club. Dortmund are expected to pay around €25m to sign Nmecha, who will earn close to €6m at Dortmund. Negotiations between both clubs remain ongoing but unless Newcastle United or Manchester United make a late push to sign the Germany international, Nmecha should be playing in Black and Yellow next season.

Another name that BVB have been linked with to plug the gap left by Bellingham is Ajax’s Edson Álvarez. The Mexican wants to join the Bundesliga club and discussions are ongoing between both clubs. Dortmund have reportedly submitted an offer of around €30m, but the Dutch club are holding out for a fee between €45m and €50m.

It’s worth noting that it’s virtually impossible to replace Bellingham. But with the departures of Ousmane Dembélé, Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland in previous years, scouring the market for replacements is something that Dortmund do well. We can also expect to see Dortmund sign two midfielders to fill the void left by the Englishman.

With 12 months remaining on his current deal, Borussia Dortmund plan to extend the contract of Emre Can. The 29-year-old was a key player for Edin Terzic in the title race run-in and BVB would be reluctant to lose Can. Salih Özcan is also expected to remain at the club while Julian Brandt, who was arguably one of Borussia Dortmund’s most important players in the final third last season, will also be a mainstay in midfield.
