‘Has he got the pace?’ – £17m Leeds United summer signing’s weakness exposed

October 6, 2025

Leeds United have made a solid start to life back in the Premier League, and some of their summer signings have played a big part in the opening exchanges of the season. However, they still cannot escape criticism from observers who are picking up small nuances.

The 2-1 defeat at home to Spurs was a hard pill to swallow for the Leeds players. They dominated Thomas Frank’s team on all counts, but paid the price for not being clinical enough in front of goal against a Spurs side who made the most of their luck at Elland Road.

However, the Leeds performance again demonstrated that they are good enough to stay up in the Premier League this season and remain a very resilient and competitive side.

But Leeds will look to fix some of the issues in their team in the coming weeks, and former defender Aidy White conceded that there are a few concerns around their marquee signing, Anton Stach.

‘Has he got the speed?’ – Anton Stach gets questioned by a former Leeds United star

Stach has made a good start in a Leeds United shirt and has quickly established himself at the heart of the Leeds midfield.

He has formed a solid midfield base along with Sean Longstaff and captain Ethan Ampadu, and scored his first goal in the win over Wolves.

However, White believes that there are a few concerns about Stach’s game, which should worry a few Leeds supporters.

He is unsure that the German midfielder has the pace to drop back quickly and help out the defence if he gets caught at the other end of the pitch.

White also pointed out that the midfielder gets turned a bit too easily for his liking.

“Stach has been consistently good. Today he got a little bit unlucky with a couple of deflections”, White said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“Sometimes I do question has he got the speed to get back in.

“He gets turned sometimes a little bit easy.”

Daniel Farke has the option to shake up his midfield
Stach has not done much wrong to get dropped, and it is unlikely that the German will be out of the team anytime soon, given his impact early in the season.

However, midfield is one area of the pitch where Farke has the option to change things and bring in fresher legs if needed.

Ao Tanaka, last season’s top midfielder in the Championship, has lost his place in the team to Sean Longstaff and is gunning to return to the starting eleven.

Ilia Gruev is another midfield option Farke has on the bench if he wants to shake things up.

Stach and his fellow midfielders will remain under pressure to perform due to the competition for places in the squad.
