Gustavo Hamer set for surprising return to Coventry City

Coventry reportedly close to agreeing deal for Sheffield United’s Hamer.

It has been almost three years since Gustavo Hamer left Coventry City, but reports suggest that the Dutchman could be about to return to the Sky Blues.

Coventry are in talks with Championship side Sheffield United to re-sign Gustavo Hamer.

The midfielder has one year left on his current deal with the Blades, and could be available at a cut price.

A reminder of Hamer’s time at Coventry
The Brazilian-born Dutchman signed for the Sky Blues in July 2020, joining from PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands for a fee exceeding £1.5m.

Hamer made 123 league appearances for Coventry in three years with the club, including scoring the winning goal in the Championship playoff semi-final against Middlesbrough in 2023.

Just a few months later, Hamer signed a four-year deal with Sheffield United, who had just been promoted to the Premier League. The deal was reported to be in the region of £15m.

How has Hamer done at Sheffield United?
Since signing for the South Yorkshire club almost three years ago, Hamer has made 123 appearances in all competitions, getting 22 goals and 29 assists in that time.

With Sheffield United, Hamer suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2024, before two seasons in the Championship, which have included a last-minute playoff final defeat, and an underwhelming season in lower mid-table.

Despite these peaks and troughs in form for his club, Hamer has been putting up good numbers throughout his time at Sheffield United, including assisting 13 times in the Championship last season, tied for most assists in the 2025/26 Championship season with Sorba Thomas, who has also been linked with a move to the Sky Blues.

How would Hamer fit into the current Coventry squad?
Hamer spent the majority of last season on the left of midfield, where he managed an assist in 55 per cent of matches from that position. He also played matches in defensive midfield, central midfield, attacking midfield and on the right-hand side.

If Frank Lampard is looking to bring in Hamer as a left-sided player, this further proves the idea that the 48-year-old head coach is looking for depth in that area, with the need to provide Ephron Mason-Clark with some competition.

Coventry already look rather strong in the centre of midfield, but adding Hamer would give Frank Lampard more firepower in that area of the pitch.

Wherever he would end up on the pitch, a return to the Coventry Building Society Arena would be a surprising one, but a move full of intrigue.
