Girona coach tells Xavi ‘he is always going to lose’ against Guardiola comparisons
Girona manager Michel has expressed support for Xavi’s efforts at Barcelona when he was questioned about the team’s performance and its playing style this season.
Michel emphasized that Xavi is doing a good job at Barça and that it is essential to consider the challenges he faces.
He also pointed out the unfairness of comparing Xavi’s work to that of the legendary Pep Guardiola, stating that such comparisons are inherently disadvantageous for Xavi.
“I don’t know if I told Xavi in the first leg. I told him that you will always lose if they remind you of Pep’s Barça,” the Girona manager was quoted by SPORT.
“This is because that team is unrepeatable. And he was also part of that team as a player,” he added.
According to Michel, Barcelona’s DNA, known for its distinctive style of play, is a high standard to uphold.
He acknowledged that the legacy of Guardiola’s tenure, during which Barcelona achieved significant success, sets a high bar for any subsequent coach.
Despite these challenges, Michel remained supportive of Xavi, urging people to recognize the effort he is putting into shaping the team.
He argued that Xavi’s approach to managing the squad and instilling the traditional Barça style should be appreciated on its own merits.
“Barça is the team with the most possession in the league, the one that reaches the area the most along with Real Madrid.
Everything I tell you about the attack is in big team numbers. Now, you may like it more or less. Those are details of each coach,” he said.
The Girona manager also talked about Barcelona’s defensive struggle, saying.
“Last year it didn’t fit. I don’t know why that transformation happened. I’m not the one to talk about them.
“I haven’t analyzed them enough, nor have I been inside to know the situations that could have been found throughout the season.”
