Former Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn on the transfer consequences of changing coaches

From last summer’s head coaching search to this summer’s hunt for a left winger, Bayern Munich has appeared to strike out on its first choices. Former CEO Oliver Kahn explained that the revolving door at Säbener Straße hasn’t helped.

“Many coaches have come and gone,” Kahn said in remarks captured by Sky Sport DE. “As a result, the philosophies and ideas have changed time and time again, as has the squad. It always feels like a constant shake-up. That naturally creates a kind of unrest.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m also self-critical enough. During my time, there was this very issue of continuity in all areas, I would have liked to have done things better. But that’s something many players and coaches say: ‘I have to think about it very carefully’.”

Kahn himself was part of the last round of shakeups, having been sacked at the end of the 2022/23 season, during which the club sacked then-head coach Julian Nagelsmann and installed Thomas Tuchel — who himself lasted about a calendar year before his separation from Bayern was announced.

The present shakeup is seeing players who have only recently joined, such as João Palhinha, Sacha Boey, and Kim Min-jae, linked with a move away, while the Bavarians struck out on Florian Wirtz and subsequently Bradley Barcola and Nico Williams.

The summer transfer window strategy seems to be coalescing now around Liverpool’s Luis Díaz and VfB Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade. But the Bavarians would surely love to have their business concluded earlier next time.
