Fiorentina chief breaks silence on Sofyan Amrabat transfer links

July 4, 2023

It sounds like a few media outlets in Italy got ahead of themselves on Monday with claims that Manchester United had agreed personal terms with Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat ahead of a potential transfer.

These reports stemmed from La Nazione, as cited by Sport Witness, and they suggest the Serie A side will demand around €30 million for the highly-rated Morocco international.

While Amrabat has enjoyed an impressive spell in Italy, it was his performances at the 2022 World Cup towards the end of last year that really caught people’s attention and it comes with little surprise to see him linked with a big move this summer.

However, in a swift turn of events, Fiorentina chief executive Giuseppe Barone has said that no bid or proposal has been received for Amrabat, despite reports linking him with a move to United.

Barone said: “We have no received any bid or proposal for him at all. He’s Fiorentina player. If any offer comes, we will consider it.”

It is important to note how Barone doesn’t rule out the possibility of selling Amrabat this summer, so this could be a deal United revisit later in the transfer market if Erik ten Hag has money left over in the kitty after signing other priority targets.

Amrabat would be a shrewd signing for the money being touted, as I think he would come into the squad as a solid upgrade on the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay.
