FC Barcelona target dreams of joining Real Madrid

June 17, 2023

Barcelona made a triumphant return to the top of Spanish football last season by winning La Liga. Real Madrid were unfortunately unable to even make things tight, with Xavi’s side clinching the league by a comfortable margin. They will know that they still have a lot of room for improvement though.

Barcelona could not even make it past the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, for the second season running. On the other hand, they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid, who went on to win the competition.

Barcelona splashed out in the 2022 summer transfer window. And they are expected to make additions this time around as well. One player that they have been linked with heavily is Joao Cancelo.

But there is bad news for Barcelona. As reported by Abendzeitung, Cancelo dreams of a commitment to Real Madrid.

Cancelo spent the second half of the season on loan at Bayern Munich. And it remains to be seen what the future holds for him. For now, he is expected to return to Manchester City.

There was believed to be a option to buy clause in his loan deal set at around €70 million. But no club is expected to shell that kind of a figure out for a 29-year-old full-back. Thus, one would hope that Manchester City are open to negotiations and flexible.

Not too long ago, Cancelo was considered the best full-back in the Premier League and someone who had redefined the role. Thus, Real Madrid could certainly do with someone of his quality.

They have already signed Fran Garcia to strengthen at left-back. But they need someone at right-back as well, with Dani Carvajal nowhere near the player that the Spaniard was in his prime.
