Exclusive: Hammers to track two potential Moyes successors

February 13, 2024

West Ham are set to track two managers as possible successors to David Moyes during the remainder of the season. The defeat against Arsenal has set the alarm bells ringing big time and the club is already on the trail of the duo as potential successors.

No 1 on their list seems to be Paulo Fonesca who joined Lille in 2022 and will be out of contract at the the end of the season. Lille are currently sitting in fifth place in Ligue one under the Portuguese manager who over the last seven years has managed Shaktar Donetzk and Roma.

He scored a double during his three seasons with Shaktar which saw him earn to title of the league’s best coach in 2016/17. They reached round 16 of the following season’s Champions League competition after finishing second in the group stage following a 2–1 home defeat of Manchester City That was City’s first defeat in 29 and Fonesca kept a promise to do his next press conference dressed as the fictional hero Zorro.

He became manager of Roma in 2019 and led the side to the fifth place in Serie A in his first season as well as the semi finals of the Europa League announcing his departure in 2021.Immediately after leaving Roma, Fonseca was top choice to manage Spurs but negotiations were scrapped on 17 June 2021 allegedly due to tax issues.

The Hammers are also looking at Frenchman Christophe Galtier who is currently in charge of Qatar Stars League outfit Al-Duhail. He had previously been at PSG in 2023 where he replaced Mauricio Pochettino parting ways with the club a year later. Earlier he had managed St Etienne, Nice and Lille.
