Everton are in talks to sign £6.7m player who has just turned down a Champions League club
Everton, before the window is up, still have plenty of work to be done.
However, it’s clear as day that their chief vacancy remains at right-back.
None of their current crop of players are fit or in form enough to have commanded a stranglehold on the spot, and despite being just two games into the new Premier League season, already they have twice been caught lacking down that flank.
First it was Ashley Young’s recklessness, swiftly followed up by Roman Dixon’s solid but wholly unexpected debut.
Perhaps Sean Dyche might be tempted to put his long-term faith in the 19-year-old, or perhaps he might be persuaded to wade into the market one last time.
Everton handed boost in move to sign Gonzalo Montiel
The latest on the Toffees’ efforts to sign a new right-back comes courtesy of journalist Uriel Lugt, who has taken to X to provide an update on Everton’s interest in Gonzalo Montiel.
Although his presence as a target of Kevin Thelwell’s has been a relatively new emergence, it still represents a potentially cut-price deal to finally solve the club’s longstanding right-back problem.
He would write: Everton and Borussia Dortmund add to the interest in Gonzalo Montiel. Talks are already underway for the full-back to leave Sevilla permanently. Nottingham Forest is also in the running. There is no formal offer yet.’
Strangely enough, this interest comes after the World Cup-winning defender turned down a move from Sevilla to PSV Eindhoven, preferring a move to the Premier League over the Eredivisie despite their Champions League qualification.
The Spanish side want just €9m (£7.6m) for his services.
Everton are oversubscribed in the right-back position
If Everton were to snag this particular deal, which by no means would solve their right-back woes given his unspectacular performances in the Premier League last season, they would almost certainly be oversubscribed in that area.
In fact, they arguably already are even with the deficiencies.
Nathan Patterson has been perennially injured throughout his entire Everton career, failing to nail down a starting spot when the opportunities emerged.
And, frustratingly enough, there were plenty with Seamus Coleman’s equally spotty fitness record.
Ashley Young, of late, has been the most available of this trio, but is by far the least reliable despite his age and experience.
Then, even James Garner has endured a stint in that role, yet he too is injured at present as well.
Montiel might not be a revolutionary addition, but hopefully, at the very least, he can provide availability and safety where they have otherwise had none.Everton, before the window is up, still have plenty of work to be done.
