Dominguez, City Ground plans, Yates – Nottingham Forest questions answered ahead of Brentford clash

September 27, 2023

Nottingham Forest will be aiming to build on the positives from Saturday’s defeat at Manchester City when they return to the City Ground this weekend.

Head coach Steve Cooper was left with mixed feelings after his team lost 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. But it has still been an encouraging start to the campaign for the Reds, and they will want to get back to winning ways when they host Brentford on Sunday.

Ahead of the match, Forest reporter Sarah Clapson held a live Q&A on our Reds Facebook page. Here is a look at how it panned out.

Q: Nicolas Dominguez was brilliant.

A: I was really impressed with him on Saturday. He was excellent.

It was a tough game to come into for his debut, but he took it in his stride and looked at home. He looked bright, showed some nice touches, wasn’t afraid of getting stuck in and used the ball pretty well.

By all accounts he has impressed in training. He’s had to be a little bit patient, waiting for his chance. But he really took it when it came and grasped the opportunity with both hands.

He’s surely got to keep his place for this weekend. It would be incredibly harsh to leave him out against Brentford after that performance.

Everyone adapts to the Premier League at different times. It takes longer for some to adjust than others, as we’ve seen with Ibrahim Sangare – he’s still finding his feet, trying to adapt to the speed and the physicality of it.

Dominguez coped with it all very well at the Etihad. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s going to be the case in every game. You do tend to find performances can be up and down when players first come in – Gonzalo Montiel is a case in point.

Dominguez has given himself a good platform to build upon, though. He has shown a lot of promise. If he keeps that up, he has the makings of being a great signing.

Midfield is one area where Forest are really strong. Steve Cooper has a lot of options and players who all have different qualities. We still haven’t seen too much of Andrey Santos. He’s someone Cooper is being particularly cautious with, not least because of his age.

Cooper has said that everyone has a part to play, though. He has got a decent track record of judging when to bring players in. In some cases, it might mean being in and out of the team for a bit, in others it might mean being patient before the breakthrough really comes. With so many options, everyone really has to fight for their place.
