Didi Hamann says German national team needs support of full nation to win

May 23, 2024

Anyone following the German national team for the last decade knows that it has been all downhill since the 2014 World Cup (with a little spike in 2017 thanks to the Confederations Cup).

As for the rest of the time, well, it has not been good.

Noted pundit and former Bayern Munich star Didi Hamann recently said that fans will have to put all of that behind them, and will have to blindly support the squad this summer if Germany wants to have any chance to win the EURO 2024 competition on its home soil.

“(England has) a decent team, so it’s about time you win. The atmosphere is a lot better because obviously (Germany) had a bad five or six years. (Germany) got knocked out in the last two World Cups in the first round, which never happened before. Lost in the round of the last 16, where I think we were probably beatable,” Hamann told Free Bets. “And then (Germany) have bad results in the friendlies, but obviously we won the last two against France and the Netherlands. So, people are getting their belief back, which is really important because when the Euro starts, you need people excited, you need people looking forward, you need the whole nation supporting you to be successful.

“I think there will be probably teams better equipped than (Germany) in the EUROs, but it’ll be fantastic. Obviously, it’s gone cold again. It’s about three or four degrees here. But come the summer, come June, I think the weather will be nice, the stadium will be full, there’ll be everything.”

As far as fans go, they will certainly take the lead from the squad. If Germany plays confident, fun, aggressive style, it will not be hard to get the supporters all hopping on board the bandwagon.
