David Moyes told what to do with Youssef Chermiti at Everton

April 22, 2025

Everton will already have their sights set on the summer transfer window.

David Moyes has done a remarkable job since his return to Goodison Park, steadying the ship and taking the Toffees away from the threat of relegation.

With nothing left to play for now, sights will be on the summer at Goodison with Moyes knowing there is plenty of work to be done.

Moyes has Youssef Chermiti choice to make
Everton will certainly want to finish their season in the best way possible, especially on the day when they say goodbye to Goodison Park.

However, with five games left to play, Moyes can also use the time between now and the end of the campaign as a trial for some players whose futures are in doubt.

With James Tarkowski forced off through injury against Manchester City on Saturday (19 April), the Blues were left short with Michael Keane coming on in his place and, ultimately, leading to City’s victory.

Therefore, this will have served as a reminder to the manager that squad depth is just as important as having a strong starting line-up.

One man, uncertain about what his future holds, is Youssef Chermiti.

The 20-year-old has had a tough campaign, missing the majority of action because of injuries that have kept him sidelined.

Chermiti has made just two appearances since his return, though, and Michael Ball has urged Moyes to get a plan in place.

Writing in the Liverpool Echo (22 April), he said: “Finally, Moyes needs to look at Youssef Chermiti. I understood the call to give Armando Broja a start against Man City, but he struggled to impress and is now ineligible to face his parent club, Chelsea, this coming weekend.

“That would be a tough match to start Chermiti in, but he needs minutes because we need to see what he can do. There has to be an emphasis on working out what to do with players on longer-term deals at Everton ahead of the summer, and the young striker deserves the chance to show whether he can have a consistent impact in the Premier League.

“If he cannot, then a loan deal might help his development next year. His omission from the squad against City was a surprise, so this is now a big week for him. If he can use any frustration to power him through training, then he should get the chance to prove a point soon.”

Chermiti worth consideration at Everton
Chermiti has admitted himself that, despite returning to fitness of late, he is still far away from where he wants to be at Everton, showing he knows there is still work to be done.

It’s a massive summer in Merseyside, especially under the Friedkin Group, which should give Moyes a bigger budget to use.

However, knowing the importance of PSR restrictions, the owners will not be prepared to go crazy, as growth has to be made sustainably, meaning some reinforcements will have to come from the inside.

Chermiti has certainly struggled this season, but given how young he still is and under contract until 2027, Moyes could find a new player on his hands.

Similarly, as Ball says, a loan move could be the more appropriate solution for the youngster next season, which wouldn’t be the worst call.

One thing is for sure, the boss needs attacking reinforcements at Everton, and as a matter of urgency. With that in mind, the boss has to test out the talent he already has to ensure he doesn’t underbuy this summer.
