David Moyes sends telling message to Mikel Arteta ahead of Man City vs West Ham
David Moyes has expressed his confidence in striker Jarrod Bowen’s ability to score crucial goals. This comes after Tottenham captain Heung-min Son missed a golden opportunity to equalise against Manchester City in the 86th minute.
Moyes, who is preparing for his 231st and final game as Hammers boss, was asked how England star Bowen, who has netted 20 times this season, would handle a similar high-pressure situation. His response will certainly please Arsenal fans hoping for an upset in the title race.
The Scottish manager confidently stated: “I’d put my money on Jarrod, yep. If he can get those opportunities, then Jarrod’s got it. So I hope we can get those opportunities and chances for him to score.”
He went on to praise Bowen’s development since being moved to centre forward in November, highlighting his improved finishing, speed, power, and overall play. Moyes added: “He’s thriving on the goals! He’s got a wee bit of the eye of the tiger in him at the moment. I’ve got to hope he keeps that going for us.”
If West Ham manage to disrupt City’s pursuit of a record fourth consecutive title, it wouldn’t be the first time a Moyes-led team has thrown a spanner in the works for title contenders.
During the 2011-12 season, David Moyes’ Everton side played out an eight-goal thriller with Manchester United, a result that paved the way for Manchester City to snatch the title from Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.
Reflecting on the match, Moyes, whose West Ham side are set to finish ninth this season, confessed: “It certainly did change things. We really took them on that day and drew four each.
“I remember it very well. Sir Alex was manager. I’ve got to tell you, he was not best pleased with me in the office after, that’s for sure. I think he gave me the cheap red wine that day.”
Whether Moyes will be enjoying champagne or cheap wine with Pep Guardiola tonight is yet to be seen.
However, he made it clear that his focus is solely on West Ham’s success, stating: “We have to do it for ourselves.”
