Danilo to Rangers transfer hits Feyenoord roadblock as Arne Slot demands Champions League replacement before exit

July 17, 2023

Rangers’ hopes of thrashing out a deal for Brazilian attacker Danilo are being stalled by a Champions League striker crisis at Feyenoord.

Record Sport understands the Ibrox club will re-engage with the Dutch club this week as Michael Beale closes in on another of his top summer targets. The two clubs have still to reach an agreement on the size of Danilo’ s fee with Feyenoord holding out for a sum in excess of £6m. But Rangers remain undeterred with chief executive James Bisgrove leading the negotiations.

However, the talks have become even more complex as Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is desperate to beef up his own attacking options ahead of the club’s return to European football’s elite. And Slot’s current first choice striker, Mexican international Santiago Giminez, will be suspended for the opening two group games – a ban which has left the manager scrambling for cover and reluctant to let Danilo leave until he gets it.

Giminez was shown a red card back in April as Feyenoord crashed out of last season’s Europa League quarter finals with a bad tempered 4-1 defeat in Italy against Roma. His ban kicks in when the new European campaign begins with Feyenoord qualifying straight into the group stages as Eredivisie champions.

But Danilo is believed to be pushing club bosses at De Kuip to sanction his early sale. Rangers remain hopeful of reaching an agreement on a fee for the 24-year-old from Sao Paulo.
